Deck Remodel

What started as a quick, fairly budget friendly project has turned into a lengthy, costly overhaul of the deck. Initially we wanted to tear down the old railing and put up cable railing - as seen in the picture the railing is done, you can compare it to the old wooden slats still on the stair rail, it was impossible to see through all that wood. The new railing is beautiful and I love it, Lance did a super job!

However, upon tearing down the railing we found rotted wood that was complete mulch along with carpenter ant colonies. The ants were at least 1/2" long with lots of egg larvae. You can see the eggs here, and as soon as Lance tore off the board in front, the ants started to throw the eggs to save them. So gross! However, the home they've carved out for themselves is pretty impressive.
Last night we discovered a cracked in the side of the chimney where the brick connects to the wood house....yeah, we've got bats living in there!
